Shaws weeknight meal plan-$57.90 in total grocery costs!
If anyone is trying to figure out your grocery list for next week we have a freebie for you this am. Yesterday we did one of our test shops on our weekly meal plan at Shaws Supermarkets. Our menu and shopping list was based on the in store specials at Shaws (we used 15 specials in total!). We perform our tests shops once or twice a month at different stores to show how you truly can save big at the register. How much does this whole week’s worth of dinners cost? (drum roll please!): $57.90!!! Yes it is true (and the cost includes some organic produce items, also on special!). Still skeptical? Here is a photo we took of the register receipt as proof:
What exactly does this $57.90 buy in terms of dinners? Take a look below at the five healthy, easy, and delicious meals on this weeknight plan. None of them were difficult to make and most took about 30 minutes or less to prep. The savings comes from the fact that each one of these meals relates to a key in store special. For instance, this week Shaws had a great special on boneless chicken breast for 3 lbs or more. We then planned two dinners for our members using this special. Cod was also a great special and given couscous and diced tomatoes were also a grocery special, our easy to make Cod with Tomatoes & Couscous was slotted in for the seafood meal. Since both ground turkey and ground meat were specials, we included a recipe that could be used with either meat. Lastly, we included a vegetarian meal and with the special on eggs shredded cheese, and broccoli, the easy to make ahead Broccoli & Tomato Frittata was an easy choice. We should note that the $57.90 does not include the cost of staples used in the recipes (ie olive oil, spices etc) because we do not buy those each week. We also acknowledge it is the grocery cost for dinners only and we know we all buy other things on top of this. However, for most of us the grocery costs related to dinners is one of the most significant parts of your weekly food costs.
This is our process each week when we plan out the menus for our members for ALL our stores. It all starts with the flyer: (1) we first look at the key protein specials (lean meats, seafood, vegetarian options), (2) we look at the dairy and grocery items (3) we look closely at the produce section of the flyer for side dishes (4) we make sure the menu is well balanced in terms of skillet, grill, easy make ahead etc. When the menu and shopping list is produced we then look for any on line coupons on numerous sites for items on the shopping list. And all the results of this work are in the three downloads at the bottom of the post so you can have a week of no planning ahead of you!
Here’s the photos of the menu and the complete plan is available to download and print at the bottom of the post. Enjoy!
